Is it difficult to fly a helicopter?

I know a couple of helicopter pilots who say it is very hard to learn to control a helicopter. I also know a couple Nam Vets who say it is easy because everyone in Nam that could not shoot it was only a helicopter pilot. one is a pilot. I personally think that if it is so difficult that no one would be a helicopter accident and the helicopter pilot would be common place breakfast. Helicopters could be even be illegal if they were so difficult to control. Also, if so difficult, why would it be legal to fly an ultralight helicopter without any training? I do not think it is so difficult. Would anyone share your opinion?
